فرمولاسیون گواش، آبرنگ غیرشفافی می باشد که با ترکیب کردن رنگدانه های شفاف آبرنگ با صمغ عربی درست می شود اما در آن صمغ نسبت بیشتری از رنگدانه دارد. این ترکیب باعث ضخیم شدن و سنگین شدن رنگ می شود. این دلیلی است که نقاشی های آبرنگی ظرافت بیشتری خواهد داشت، اما هر دوی آنها قابل حل شدن در آب می باشد.

امروزه نوعی از گواش‌ها با عنوان گواش آکریلیکی نیز تولید می‌شوند که شباهت زیادی به گواش‌های سنتی دارند اما نیازی به اضافه کردن آب ندارند و می‌توانند به صورت مستقیم مورد استفاده قرار بگیرند. این گواش‌ها از قدرت چسبندگی بسیار بالایی برخوردار بوده و به هر سطح می‌چسبند.
